Zendaya’s Stylist Law Roach On His Strategy For Dressing The Star

As Zendaya’s stylist and co-creative director of her shoe line Daya by Zendaya, Law Roach is her secret weapon when it comes to creating a fashion identity. The L.A.-based risk-taker also tends to the fashion needs of Ariana Grande, Skai Jackson, Ruby Rose and Celine Dion. And recently, he scored a gig as judge on the upcoming “America’s Next Top Model.”

Here, Law sheds some light on the quirky ways he works.

On how he and Zendaya met:
“I met her through a really close friend of their family. I was just in the right place at the right time. We met so randomly in L.A. on the day Justin Bieber had a premiere for his ‘Never Say Never’ film. She was going shopping to figure out something to wear. The family friend said I was a great stylist, but I wasn’t a stylist at the time, per se. We went shopping and have been friends ever since. We went to Santa Monica – the Promenade. We got the entire look from Nordstrom and Kitson. She wore this Alice and Olivia metallic blazer and a white tank top and a moldy greenish-looking patent leather Alexander Wang skirt and some black tights and black boots. We thought it was so conceptual. I think it was age appropriate and cool, because in L.A., sometimes the girls are very safe or really sexy. It’s always a crop top and A-line skirt. I think in comparison to that, back then it was ahead of its time. That was the very first look.”

Zendaya Stylist Law Roach

Zendaya with her long-term personal stylist, Law Roach.

On how Zendaya’s style has evolved:
“She has become one of the girls to watch. For us, I don’t think we have a look. You can’t just look at something and say, ‘That’s Zendaya.’ As opposed you can look at some other people and say, ‘That’s very J.Lo, that’s very Gwen Stefani, that’s very Halle Berry.’ For us, every look is a new experience.”

On how his head-to-toe looks come together:
“A shoe can inspire us, or a dress or hairstyle I’ve been thinking about. There’s no set way we do it. We do this [stuff] because it’s fun for us. We’ll go back after and laugh at the pictures the next day. We do a lot of it just to entertain ourselves. Like the hair and makeup for the Met Gala, I watched ‘Conan the Barbarian,’ and one part of it there was this group of people that worshipped a big serpent. So I wanted to do something reptilian-looking mixed with something Cleopatra, so that’s where it came from. The shoes didn’t show, but we did a customized Stuart Weitzman.”

Zendaya Met Gala 2016 Red Carpet Shoes

On how they collaborate on styling:
“She pretty much lets me do whatever I want, but when I bring her things, she’ll say, ‘I was just thinking about that.’ Or she’ll put a reference from her phone and she just screenshot the day before. We have this unique synergy. We can finish each other’s sentences. We can basically look at each other and automatically know. It’s the weirdest [thing] ever. We’ve grown up together. We’ve helped each other through things together. It’s not just stylist-artist, stylist-client. She’s my boss, really, but it’s this real, natural organic thing that we have. She’s not afraid of anything, so that makes it even more fun. Like [for the FN cover shoot], I said, ‘Let’s do braids like A$AP Rocky,’ and she said, ‘OK.’ She does have her own point of you, but I’m lucky to understand that so I can keep my vision within the realm of who she is. I call her my fashion soul mate.”

Zendaya Behind The Scenes Photo Shoot

Tag team: Roach and FN fashion director Mosha Lundström Halbert get Zendaya zipped and buttoned up in her Angus booties and a fringy number by BCBGMAXAZRIA.

On his path to styling:
“I’ve always been obsessed with vintage, so I would go to a lot of resale stores and estate sales and started to collect this huge collection of vintage things. My mom was like, ‘You’re filling up my house —what are you going to do with it?’ I had friends over, and they were like, ‘I’ll buy that from you’. So something I got for $2, I would sell for $50, I thought, this was a business —a real business. That turned into opening up a couple of boutiques, which led to styling.”

On what being an “image architect” means, the term he refers to himself as on Instagram:
“That was really me being shady. I feel like that term is oversaturated and a lot of people call themselves a stylist. I wanted to separate myself not in a bad way, but because I’m involved in a strategic level. I do the full look, except for Ariana [Grande]. I do hair, makeup, nail color. I am obsessed. I have to control the whole look.”

Zendaya Stylist Law Roach

Zendaya and Law Roach.

On establishing individuality among his clients:
“They are not similar at all. The age group, the style, the aesthetic is different. That’s what people like about working about me because I don’t dress my girls the same. I figure out who they are, where they are and I incorporate my aesthetic into that but keeping it very organic as opposed to some other stylists who dress 10 girls and all 10 look the same. I try to spend time with my girls and identify with them.”

On the shoe design process:
“It’s very tedious because we try to be as hands-on as possible. We look at fabrication, study heel heights and trends, like what’s selling in which part of the country and which stores. It’s long, drawn-out process just to get to the shoe. We both didn’t think it would be that much work, but it really is. She’s very adamant about having control and input on something that has her name on it.”

Zendaya Behind The Scenes Photo Shoot

For the shoot in downtown Los Angeles’ flower district, Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach arrived willing to try designer looks and denim that showcased her Daya by Zendaya shoes.

On a shoe memory with Zendaya:
“Christian Louboutin makes this pump — a single sole pump — it’s called the Hot Chick. It has a pitch that’s straight up and six inches. Rumor has it that he said he did not design the shoes to be worn outside — they were made for the bedroom because they are super-sexy. She made me find them for her, and we decided she would wear them to the red carpet of the Radio Disney Music Awards last year. She put them on and said, ‘This isn’t so bad.’ Literally eight minutes into the walk to the carpet, I was holding her up because her legs were buckling. She got to the carpet — and you’d never know — she did the carpet and she walked off, and we had to carry her a little bit until she took the shoe off. But she did it.”

About 80 percent of the purchase price of the shoes will help support the fight against breast cancer.

Now in its 23rd year, FFANY Shoes on Sale is the footwear industry’s largest charity event and has over the years raised a total of $50 million to support first-step cancer research and education.

QVC has been a Shoes on Sale partner for 21 years, and its team takes its commitment very seriously.

Treacy told FN before a previous broadcast, “[Shoes on Sale] is the shining moment of my year as a host. I sadly lost my mother to cancer, so I [channeled] that into work. I’ve always been an avid volunteer for cancer organizations. … It does my heart good to see years later how much money has been raised.”

How To Style One of Fall’s Biggest Shoe Trends: Stretch Boots

Inside the Event That Sells 75,000 Pairs of Shoes

The 23rd annual QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale” fundraising gala returns this week, featuring an even larger assortment of footwear for sale than ever. More than 87,000 pairs have been donated by 85 brands, 16 of which are new to the event.

Typically, about 75,000 pairs of shoes are sold during the live gala and accompanying QVC telethon, said Mike George, president and CEO of QVC. He estimated that this year’s event could add from $1 million to $5 million to the total of $50 million raised by the fundraiser in its history.

FFANY Shoes on Sale will be held Oct. 25, once again at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, hosted by QVC personality Jill Martin.

And in an unusual twist, the complementary three-hour QVC telethon, which typically runs after the gala, aired last week, on Oct. 20.

Newcomers among the 85 brands participating in Shoes on Sale include Daya by Zendaya (who is also the 2016 PSA spokesperson), Carter’s, Fila, Tretorn, ED by Ellen Degeneres and Ann Marino by Bettye Muller. In addition, the fundraiser has doubled its selection of men’s footwear.

With this larger assortment, the organizers plan to highlight more product on Oct. 25. Ron Fromm, president and CEO of FFANY, said the inventory of shoes for sale during the evening will double, to 3,500 pairs. And the Designer Shoe Salon is expanding to include space in the foyer of the Waldorf, where for the first time the public will be allowed to shop, beginning at 7:30 p.m., though entry will be limited to the first 500 people.

The Special Honorees

In addition to hosting the Shoe Salon, FFANY will bestow its annual awards at the gala. This year, the organization is recognizing Aquazzura founder Edgardo Osorio as its Designer of the Year; activist and author Sandra Lee will receive the Jodi Fisher Humanitarian Award; and e-tailer Shopbop has been named Retailer of the Year.

“We are proud to honor these exceptional people and companies at this year’s FFANY Shoes on Sale,” said Fromm. “This year’s honorees were chosen not only for their leadership within their respective fields, but for their continual dedication and support to the footwear industry and breast cancer research.”

Finally, a special tribute to Jerome Fisher, the co-founder of Nine West who died in June, will take place at the event as well. Fromm said the Fisher Charitable Foundation will announce “a substantial gift” to lead off a text pledge drive.

Making a Difference

For more than 20 years, competitors from across the footwear industry have united to support FFANY Shoes on Sale by donating shoes and other resources. This year, four companies are serving as Pink Benefactors, meaning they’ve contributed more than $500,000 worth of product. Those companies are Caleres, Camuto Group, Nine West Holdings Inc. and Marc Fisher Footwear.

Diane Sullivan, chairman, president and CEO of Caleres, highlighted her company’s commitment to fighting breast cancer. “We all know someone who has been affected by the disease,” she said. “The money that comes back from this great event to our community and [research teams like] Siteman Cancer Center benefits our co-workers, families and friends. It is very personal to us, and we are honored to lend our support.”

The Shoes on Sale fundraiser also features styles from Carlos by Carlos Santana (top) and Jessica Simpson.

There are nine beneficiaries of the charity event, including Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Angela DeMichele, co-chair of Abramson’s 2-Prevent Breast Cancer Translational Center of Excellence at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, said funding received from Shoes on Sale “has been instrumental” in developing the research center at the university.

“2-Prevent is focused on breast cancer recurrence, developing innovative ways to detect and prevent recurrence before it becomes incurable metastatic disease, and developing personalized approaches to treating those who have developed recurrence through molecular diagnosis and tailored treatment,” she added.

Said QVC’s George: “I’m always blown away by the stories [from the beneficiaries], by how important the funding is for them and how they use it. You feel good that the funding is going to worthwhile organizations.”

Zendaya, who produces her namesake Daya by Zendaya shoe brand with Huntington Beach, Calif.-based Titan Industries, is continuing her dedication to the footwear industry by lending her support to QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale” and the battle against breast cancer. For the actress and singer, whose grandmother dealt with the disease, the cause is a crucial one.

“Breast cancer can affect so many women, and there’s not a lot of awareness,” she said. “Young people especially don’t know the signs, so [supporting this cause] is definitely important to me since I have so many young women who are fans.”

In addition to starring in national PSAs, Zendaya’s brand contributed shoes to the fundraiser, which has raised more than $50 million for first-step breast cancer research over the past 23 years.

Zendaya FFANY Shoes on Sale

The star is the official PSA spokesperson for “FFANY Shoes on Sale.”

Although just 20 years old, Zendaya told Footwear News that she is completely comfortable in the limelight. “I take the job of being a role model very seriously,” she said. “I just want to give young people a positive person to look up to. I want them to be honest, passionate and thoughtful humans.”

One way she often connects with fans is on social media, where she has a huge following — 3 million on Instagram alone.

Even there, her goal is always to inspire. “Of course social media is fun to post selfies,” she said. “But I try to use it as a platform to talk about important issues that need light shed on them.”

While so many young girls look to her for guidance, Zendaya said it is her own mother and older sisters who have had the greatest influence on her.

“[They] show me a great example of what it is to be a genuine, good person. Even my nieces — I look at them as little queens,” she said. “I want them to grow up to rule their own kingdom. I’m very inspired by that.”

The evening ended with a special tribute from Marc Fisher to his father, “FFANY Shoes on Sale” co-founder Jerome Fisher.

“My sister and dad founded this event almost 25 years ago. They started in a small tent in Central Park,” Fisher told the crowd. “My dad had an incredible passion for the shoe business. He loved shoes. Boy, would he love a fall day like today. He would just pray for boot weather like this.”

Zendaya, who was the official spokesperson for QVC Presents “FFANY Shoes on Sale,” contributed footwear from her line, Daya, to the event, which has raised more than $50 million for first-step breast cancer research over the past 23 years.

Best Foot Forward: 8 Shoes That Will Make Your Feet Look Pretty

Foot flattery: It’s not often discussed but always noticed. Shoes, like shapewear or a perfectly tailored suit, have the ability to highlight the good, conceal the bad and create a sinewy, seductive line.

Speaking to Footwear News this summer, cover star Zendaya echoed this sentiment when it comes to her own look and also the pairs she helps create for her Daya by Zendaya collection. “I am all about a good ‘foot shoe,’ meaning I want it to look good on my foot,” she said, citing the cut of the vamp and throat and height of the pitch as key focal points.” There is nothing worse than a shoe that doesn’t make your leg look good. That irritates me.”

Yet so many styles exist more as sculptural experiments and extreme fashion statements rather than foot-friendly enhancers of one’s figure. With that in mind, here are nine key styles that emphasize all the right spots from silhouette and shape masters such as Azzedine Alaïa, Gianvito Rossi, Aquazzura’s Edgardo Osorio and Jimmy Choo’s Sandra Choi.

Meanwhile, Grammy award-winning R&B star The Weeknd will also share his love of fashion with pop-ups launching in five cities. The musician will present a capsule collection in partnership with Bravado, a merchandise company, at Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles and New York City, Alchemist in Miami, Complex Con in Long Beach, Calif., and Selfridges in London. More locations and dates will be announced later, according to his Instagram page.

In September, he was announced as Puma’s new global brand ambassador and creative collaborator. Part of his deal includes his own collection of sneakers and apparel due next year that the brand describes as “a fusion of Puma’s sport-inspired designs and The Weeknd’s street-motivated aesthetics as seen in his label, XO.”

Landing a role in Marvel’s upcoming “Spider-Man” film, starring in and co-producing Disney Channel’s “K.C. Undercover” and working on a new album are just a few of Zendaya’s accomplishments that make her a rising star in entertainment.

The actress-singer has also making her mark on the footwear industry ever since she launched her namesake label, Daya by Zendaya, which is why she’s set to receive the Launch of the Year honor at the 2016 Footwear News Achievement Awards.

Said Zendaya, “This year has been a big year and I am honored as a 20-year-old to be next to such powerful people in this creative space that I look up to so much.”

Zendaya

Her brand, which is produced by Titan Industries, launched for spring ’16 under the name Sole of Daya. With a revamp for fall ’16, which included lowering price points and a name change, Daya by Zendaya has made a splash on the retail front. And to go with shoes, she launched a coinciding clothing line this month under the same name along with her own direct-to-consumer e-commerce site.

“Since I’m learning more about the making of shoes, I’m becoming more sure of myself,” Zendaya told Footwear News this year. “I know what I want faster.”

She also told FN, “For my demographic, I’m catering to real women who work, are getting their first jobs or are in college. I want them to have shoes that make sense for them.”

Styles include the popular strappy pump, flats, booties and the classic heel, all retailing from $70 to $125.

“I want women to feel expensive, luxurious and beautiful, but not have to spend three years saving up for one pair of shoes,” she added.

The honor will be presented at the 30th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards in New York City on Tuesday. Sarah Jessica Parker was the most recent recipient of the award, which she accepted in 2014. Other previous Launch of the Year winners include Paul Andrew, Rachel Zoe and Tabitha Simmons.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, Footwear News will host its 2016 Achievement Awards in New York, honoring the best and brightest in the industry, including Launch of the Year winner Zendaya. Read on to learn more about her accomplishments.

At the ripe age of 20, Zendaya has accomplished more than your average public figure. She is a face of CoverGirl, a Disney Channel star and a member of the Marvel universe, with a plum role in 2017’s “Spider-Man” film. On top of all that, she’s a shoe designer.

Her Daya by Zendaya brand, which is produced by Huntington Beach, Calif.-based Titan Industries, initially launched under the name Sole of Daya for spring ’16 but got off to a rocky start, according to Titan CEO Joe Ouaknine.

Zendaya Shoes

Zendaya unveils her new spring ’16 shoe line.

But with a few adjustments (such as lower price points), Titan, Zendaya and her co-creative director and personal stylist, Law Roach, reintroduced the line for fall ’16 with a more confident and informed direction. “Since I’ve learned [more] about the making of shoes, I’m becoming more sure of myself,” Zendaya said. “I know what I want faster.”

Styles in the line include a popular strappy pump, flats, booties and a classic heel, all retailing from $70 to $125. “I don’t want to create knockoffs,” the star told FN earlier this year.“I want to create our own movement and style. I want women to feel luxurious and beautiful, but not have to spend three years saving up for a pair of shoes.”

Her design partner emphasized that Zendaya makes her own decisions across the board, whether it comes to her fashion or entertainment careers. “We try to be as hands-on as possible,” said Roach. “She’s adamant about having control and input on something that has her name on it.”

And despite an already hectic schedule, Zendaya is continuing to grow her budding fashion business. This month, she launched a ready-to-wear collection under her namesake label and also debuted an e-commerce site for the brand. Ouaknine noted that a big turning point for Daya was gaining placement in Macy’s and Nordstrom for fall. Since then, the business has seen a ripple effect.

“We weren’t able to capture everyone’s attention to the brand [at first], but since the shoes performed so well — all of sudden, people are buying and expanding doors [for the brand],” he said.

To mark the launch of the Daya by Zendaya apparel line, the actress made surprise appearances at pop-up store locations in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, which had fans lining up around the block.

Ouaknine reported that the clothing line has been well received. And the e-commerce site, which stocks Zendaya’s complete collection, “is pumping more shoes out of the warehouse,” he said.

For fall ’17, the executive hinted that consumers can expect “the best line ever,” as the brand expands beyond high heels into new categories. “I expect a big business,” Ouaknine said. “The price points are so friendly, and once the extension happens at retail and the shoes are exposed, I can see a big explosion.”

As for the designer, whose audience includes nearly 36 million followers on Instagram alone, this is just the beginning. “There are so many things that are being created and prepared to come out — 2017 is going to be a big year,” Zendaya said.

Inspiration was close to home for Zendaya when she made her foray into shoe design.

The 20-year-old actress recalled what piqued her fascination with footwear today at the 30th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards in New York City, where her namesake Daya by Zendaya shoe line was recognized as the Launch of the Year.

Zendaya FNAA 2016

“I was always obsessed with heels and always wanted to be in them, so it’s only fitting that I became a shoe designer myself,” the “Spider-Man” star shared with Footwear News on the red carpet at the footwear industry’s equivalent to the Oscars.

“My mom never really wore heels — she’s not a heels kind of woman. She’s 6-foot-4 and was always self-conscious about wearing heels, but I was obsessed with them,” she added. “So I would go to my grandma’s closet and try on her shoes, no matter how big they were, and walk around everywhere.”

Zendaya recently produced a fall ’16 collection that starts at $70 for slide sandals and tops out at $125 for mid-calf gladiators. Other styles include flats, booties, strappy pumps and classic heels.

She added that shoe design transcends aesthetics — it’s also an emotional experience. “In many ways they can change how people feel,” she explained. “That’s why I love fashion — it’s emotional and makes you feel something. If you buy a pair of shoes, that feeling of happiness is a real thing.”

As an artist and creative type, Nicky Hilton Rothschild was never meant to blend in with the crowd.

The socialite and former model shared today at the 30th annual Footwear News Achievement Awards how much she dreaded having to wear a demure uniform as a youngster while attending Catholic school, but she did find a way to highlight her individuality.

“We weren’t allowed to wear nail polish or makeup, so our shoes were the only way were allowed to express ourselves,” she shared with FN at the footwear industry’s “shoe Oscars.”

“You had to wear saddle shoes, but in middle school, you were able to wear your own choice,” she added. “It was the ‘90s, so [I wore] Keds and Converse.”

Much like her sister Paris Hilton — who has a perfume, shoe line and accessories — Nicky is also a designer, with a clothing, handbag and jewelry line. But her eponymous empire is expanding: “I’m working on a design project right now and it would be amazing to do shoes one day, but until then I’ll wear everybody else’s.”

One source of inspiration for Hilton Rothschild is the FNAA’s 2016 Shoe of the Year winner, Rihanna.

“I’m excited to see Rihanna. She always turns it out on the red carpet,” she said of the Fenty x Puma designer. “She’s very original and she never follows the trends — she sets the trends.”

Google has released its annual “Year in Search” report, which highlights what people worldwide looked for most on the search engine.

It includes people, places, sports, food, entertainment and much more. One highlight was the most-searched fashion designers category. Rachel Roy topped the list, likely not for her designs but more for her suspected identity as “Becky with the good hair” in the Beyoncé song “Sorry,” which hints at her husband Jay Z’s infidelity.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Zendaya, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Sonia Rykiel, Ivanka Trump, Beyoncé and Kanye West also made the list. Footwear News honored Zendaya with the Launch of the Year Award at the FN Achievement Awards on Nov. 29 for her label, Daya by Zendaya.

West continues to enjoy huge success with his Yeezy line; the next release of a Yeezy shoe with Adidas is scheduled for Saturday. The Olsen twins remain largely out of the spotlight as they continue to build their successful fashion lines, Elizabeth & James and The Row.

Beyoncé made waves this year not only with her visual album, “Lemonade,” but also with her athleisure fashion line called Ivy Park.

Dolce & Gabbana unveiled its spring ’17 ad campaign today.

In its continued push to appeal to millennials, the Italian label tapped a group of young faces to front the campaign, which is set on the Italian island of Capri. Of course, no campaign geared toward a youthful crowd would be complete without an accompanying hashtag: The brand chose #DGMillennials, among others.

Zendaya and a group of international peers were photographed frolicking in the streets of Capri, decked out in D&G’s usual wild prints. In one shot, Zendaya, who also has her own shoe line, wears a pair of D&G red and white sneakers. In another, she wears jeweled peep-toe pumps.
