Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Wilde and Zendaya were among many celebrities hitting the party scene before Oscar Sunday. For the past week, stars have rolled into Los Angeles hitting event after event that all lead up to the 2016 Academy Awards.

Lawrence stunned in Sophia Webster sandals at the Dinner for Equality event on Thursday night in Beverly Hills, Calif. The “Joy” actress is nominated for her fourth Oscar for her performance, making her the youngest actor ever to nab that many Oscar nods.

The event was co-hosted by Patricia Arquette. Other guests in attendance included Minka Kelly, Petra Nemcova and Marisa Tomei.

Badgley Mischka And Titan Industries Buy Trademark Rights From Iconix

Mark Badgley and James Mischka and partner Titan Industries Inc. announced today that they purchased the rights to the Badgley Mischka trademark for $16 million in cash.

Apparel licensee MJCLK LLC is also a partner. Iconix Brand Group was the former rights owner (while Titan was a longtime partner on the footwear license).

“We have had a productive 11 years working with the Iconix team to build Badgley Mischka from its red-carpet origins to a full lifestyle luxury brand,” said Mark Badgley. “We are excited to manage our core product categories in-house and focus on the luxury aspect in both product and image.”

Added brand parter James Mischka, “We intend to capitalize on the strength of our women’s Couture and ready-to-wear collections and especially the success of the shoe collections, to further this partnership with Titan, a company with tremendous expertise in the luxury market,” he said. “The core values of Badgley Mischka have always been luxury and timeless glamour; buying the brand back in this partnership will provide the basis to develop these attributes in a modern and exciting manor.”

Titan CEO Joe Ouaknine said that additional opportunities include future category launches.

“We can expand in different categories, such as home, for example,” he said. “We will also now have unrestricted possibilities for the footwear category.”

Iconix, which tapped retail-industry veteran John Haugh for its CEO post last month, has shouldered a wave of controversy over the past year. Its founder and former CEO Neil Cole abruptly exited the company in August 2015 while an ongoing probe by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission led the firm to restate several years of earnings just this past February.

In January, musician Pharrell Williams repurchased Iconix’s 50 percent stake in his BBC Ice Cream LLC business, signaling that some brands might be looking to distance themselves from the company. Iconix’s highly publicized challenges have also weighed on the firm’s stock. The company’s share price dropped to a 52-week low of $4.67 on Jan. 20, compared with a 52-week high of $37.29 in March 2015.

Titan also houses Zendaya’s line Daya, Gx by Gwen Stefani, L.A.M.B. and Charles Jourdan.

Alicia Vikander, the newly minted Oscar winner and big Vuitton fan, was spotted in the front row with Bond girl Lea Seydoux.

Following the program, Beyoncé released a 12-track album via Tidal, Jay Z’s streaming service.

An encore presentation is available to view on the cable channel on Sunday at 8 p.m. EST during HBO’s free weekend preview.

Zendaya is fast becoming a style icon — and that’s not just limited to her red-carpet appearances.

The 19-year-old actress and singer was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday following her appearance at the 2016 Met Gala in New York. For her travels, she wore black leggings, an Ivy Park sweatshirt and Nike slides. Ivy Park designer Beyoncé tapped Zendaya to be a part of one of the videos in her “Lemonade” HBO visual album special.

While Zendaya totally rocks the athleisure look, she also knows how to turn on the high fashion glam for the red carpet. At Monday night’s Met Gala celebrating the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” Zendaya wore a one-shouldered, beaded Michael Kors gown. As for footwear, she wore a pair of Stuart Weitzman Runway platform sandals.

Toms shoes wants you to take your shoes off.

The annual Day #WithoutShoes campaign kicked off Tuesday morning online to help raise awareness for the Toms One-to-One mission. The social media effort asks fans to ditch their shoes for a day and share a snap of their bare feet on Instagram. Toms hopes to give away 100,00 pairs of shoes to kids in need during the May 10th campaign and will donate one pair for each photo shared and tagged @Toms and #withoutshoes.

Zendaya was among the stars to give a shout-out to Toms on Instagram today. The singer stepped out in Los Angeles with Toms and the LA Best After School Program to donate shoes to kids in need. Comedian-actress Chelsea Handler also got in on the action, sharing a photo this morning, too.

The 7 Best, 7 Worst & Most Notable Fashion Moments At The Billboard Awards

$

The music world can always be counted on for stomping all-over caution in favor of the audacious. And the Billboard Music Awards are always a prime example of this — what with their delightful, if at times jarring, array of looks.

Sunday night in Las Vegas, if there was a dress code, it was largely ignored, with stars turning up in everything from jeans and T-shirts to full-blown gowns, usually slit to there or cut out to the nth degree.

Billboard Awards 2016 Best Dressed

Best Dressed: Troye Sivan, Jessica Alba, Rihanna & Rebecca Romijn.

Honorable mentions go to the divas of the night. Céline Dion was exquisite in a metallic dress with platform Saint Laurent pumps. Madonna also wore a platform pump, paired with a purple brocade suit in tribute to Prince.

Ciara impressed with her multiple outfit changes, one out-glamming the other, in shoes by Casadei, Giuseppe Zanotti and Stuart Weitzman. And Britney Spears was true to form in her much-t00-muchness, but this time wore her signature see-through mini dress with a eye-catching pair of Schutz’s Karlyanna latticework boots.

Billboard Awards 2016 Best Dressed

Best Dressed: DJ Khaled, Zendaya & Kesha.

Rihanna and Kesha stood out as the best dressed of the night, both on and off the stage in runway looks from Thierry Mugler and Gucci, respectively. Kesha’s block-heel Gucci loafers were particularly fresh for the red carpet (which was awash in same-old stilettos) and was the most forward look she’s sported to date.

While Rihanna’s vintage jacket-dress was relatively toned down, her Manolo Blahnik lace mules with crystal buckle detail were the night’s most elegant and unique shoe.

Billboard Awards 2016 Worst Dressed

Worst Dressed: Nick Jonas, Meghan Trainor & Seal.

Other shout-outs go to DJ Khaled, who cleaned up nicely in a suit with sleek loafers, Zendaya in Calvin Klein with Charlotte Olympia shoe underneath her skirt’s sweeping hemline, and Jessica Alba, who finished her lace dress with over-the-knee boots by Stuart Weitzman.

On the other end of the spectrum, there was Mark Cuban, who looked beyond schlepp-y in his casual fare. Ditto Fallout Boy’s Pete Wentz in his ill-fitting denim. But the biggest letdown of the night was a surprise from Wiz Khalifa, who usually turns it out in skinny suiting. Brown trousers and a white shirt had no pizzazz, nor did his plain white Converse Chucks.

Toms may have found fame through social media, but hundreds of notable names have been wearing the shoes for years.

Most recently, Disney star Zendaya teamed up with the brand for its annual Day #WithoutShoes campaign last month. The social media effort asks fans to ditch their shoes for a day and share a snap of their bare feet on Instagram to help raise awareness for the Toms One-to-One mission. Zendaya took part in the social media initiative and also partnered with Toms and the LA’s Best after-school program to donate shoes to kids in need in Los Angeles.

Celebrities Wearing Toms Shoes

Other celebs who have joined the Toms cause include Charlize Theron, Christy Turlington and Tabitha Simmons.

Theron is a longtime partner. The Oscar winner debuted her first collab with the company and the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on a limited-edition shoe in 2009. Toms founder Blake Mycoskie and Theron have partnered several times over the years since then. Their newest collab, Toms x CTAOP, which helps children in South Africa, debuts in July.

“I hope that the collaboration helps continue to shine a light on the deep need for HIV prevention among youth, and the fact that in parts of the world HIV/AIDS is still very much devastating families, communities and entire countries,” she told Footwear News. “Beyond that, I hope the products give people an opportunity to play a part in changing that reality.”

Celebrities Wearing Toms Shoes

Charlize Theron hit the streets of Los Angeles in red Toms back in 2013.

Jessica Alba, who often wears Toms throughout her day-to-day life, was on hand to support chief Toms shoegiver Mycoskie to celebrate the Toms for Target collaboration in November 2014. She has also said that Toms are essential while traveling.

For shoe lovers, the BET Awards is one show to keep and eye on. Summer awards shows call for casual, fun red carpet looks, which means dresses that don’t conceal footwear and cool sneakers.

Last year, we saw Ciara and Zendaya both go for head-to-toe shimmer. Ciara wore a Wes Gorden dress paired with her go-to Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandals, while Zendaya turned heads in a Nicolas Jebran shirtdress and Roberto Cavalli platform sandals.

Teen Talk With Leila Roker: Summer Trends & Must-Follow Snapchats

$
0

The hottest time of the year — both literally and figuratively — has arrived. If you haven’t yet gotten or scheduled your pedicure, let this serve as your reminder: It’s open-toe season.

June 20 marked the official start of the season of longer, warmer days and shorter nights. And since teens continue to be one of the most trendsetting demographics out here, Footwear News just had to get the buzz on how this group is staying stylish all summer ’16 (see: Drake).

So, we enlisted the help of a few trendy teens to find out their must-have summer looks. And, since it’s arguably the most-influential app on the social media scene right now, we’ve also asked our teen squad to dish on their must-follow Snapchat accounts.

Read on for the spiel.

Leila, 17

Favorite summer shoes:

“I have a pair of great Free People sandals. They have a chunky heel — so even though they’re heeled, they’re definitely walkable. They have tons of straps, which is cute because it’s sort of a purposeful messy look. I wear them with girly outfits to add some spunk, or casual jeans to dress it up.”

If you could only follow one person on Snapchat, who would it be?

Kylie Jenner. Even though I know some of the clothes are advertisements, I feel like she reflects what’s in and is kind of at the epicenter of the gossip. Plus, a lot of times, I’m loving her Puma or Adidas outfits and shoes.”

Kylie Jenner Puma

Kylie Jenner in the Puma Fierce ad campaign.

One person you wished followed you on Snapchat:

“I would love it if Drake followed me. I feel like he would comment on all my stories and always give me a motivational phrase and just be like really chill. Also wouldn’t mind some OVO sneak peaks.”

One summer accessory or beauty product that you absolutely can’t live without:

“I’ve been constantly grabbing for MCM sunglasses. They’re aviators that are color-reflected. I’ve totally been seeing that all over, and I think it brings a cool, laid-back look and just pulls an outfit together.”

Arkeem, 18

Favorite summer shoes:

“Stan Smiths by Adidas. You see them everywhere — they’re definitely a teen wardrobe staple. They’re very lightweight and comfortable for whatever summer activity you might be doing whether it’s going to the beach or just hanging out with friends.”

Adidas Originals Mens Leather Sock Pack

Adidas Originals Stan Smith Leather Sock sneakers.

If you could only follow one person on Snapchat, who would it be?

Rihanna — even though her videos get a little crazy, I think she’s super real, natural and fun.”

One person you wished followed you on Snapchat:

“DJ Khaled. He is a very frequent snapper who would definitely reply back to his fans and show constant love.”

One summer accessory or beauty product that you absolutely can’t live without:

“Even though it’s a bit overpriced, an Apple watch is one accessory I just can’t live without at the moment. Whether it’s shooting a quick text or just checking the time, it’s more than just an easy-access notification center. It helps with the little things for everyday life.”

Dara, 17

Favorite summer shoes:

“I have these black platform sandals that just have one strap with a thick, ribbed quality to it. They’re from Urban Outfitters. They’re my favorite because they’re really simple and just easy to wear and put on. I mostly go with casual wear, and I think they’re super easy running-out-the-door look, while still looking like there’s some effort.”

If you could only follow one person on Snapchat, who would it be?

“I actually don’t have Snapchat. But, if I did, I would follow Zendaya because she’s a young black girl [like me] and seems like an interesting person who’s pretty versatile, yet laid-back, when it comes to fashion. I would be interested in seeing her go from events from day to day. I’m also a fan of her ability to [pull of] jumpsuits.”

Zendaya wears Louis Vuitton Unchained sandal heels.

One person you wished followed you on Snapchat:

“Jennifer Lawrence. Because she’s really funny and I wouldn’t mind being friends with her. I feel like she wouldn’t judge me at all. She also seems like the type to only dress up when she has to, which is totally me.”

One summer accessory or beauty product that you absolutely can’t live without:

“I can’t live without my Puma Sneakers. They’re not necessarily a summer accessory but they go well with everything and give you an effortless cool. They’re super in right now with the Rihanna Creepers. They’re great for running around the city or even the Hamptons.”

Reggie, 17

Top shoe style for summer:

“The Rihanna Creepers. She’s had a few releases, and I’ve wanted them for so long. I think it’s a unisex shoe that could really meld into anyone’s wardrobe. She has some feminine colors [as well as] some solids that any guy could pull off.”

If you could only follow one person on Snapchat, who would it be?

“Kanye West. I think he really sets the tone for my generation and most of what he says or does ends up going viral or is in the news. So he’s a must-have on Snapchat.”

Zendaya On Her Love For Oprah, Staying Authentic & Avoiding Knockoffs

So, you haven’t heard of Zendaya? Don’t fret. The Disney dynamo and millennial fashion phenomenon has no qualms explaining who she is.

“If Beyoncé, Oprah [Winfrey] and Shonda Rhimes had a baby, that would be me,” quipped the 19-year-old actress, singer, dancer and public speaker while on set recently for a Footwear News cover shoot in the flower district of Los Angeles.

Like the three innovators she feels kinship with, Zendaya — who is 5 feet 10 inches tall with a model’s lean build — has her eyes firmly fixed on multimedia domination, and on her own terms. She is already well on her way, with a new album in the works and a 36-million-strong social media following. Her audience hangs on her every tweet (she’s not afraid to respond to bigotry from trolls with a snappy retort), Instagram (a perfect showcase for her daring, increasingly cool style on and off the red carpet) and Snapchat (where she is often seen eating pizza with family or joking with her parents, Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu, who double as managers and handlers).

The latest medium the Oakland, Calif.-born Zendaya (the “day” is pronounced as such) is determined to leave her mark on is footwear. Shoes are the celebrity project du jour, but it can be a tricky category to get right. The budding businesswoman knows about the challenges firsthand.

Her Sole of Daya line launched for spring ’16 with Titan Industries, the Huntington, Calif.-based footwear licensee. The market response was that the collection, while desirable, was too expensive for the many young women. Along with her co-creative director and personal stylist, Law Roach, Zendaya and Titan regrouped for fall ’16.

“It’s the same aesthetic and quality; we just wanted to make it more affordable, especially for my fans,” she said. “For my demographic, I’m catering to real women who work, are getting their first jobs or are in college. I want them to have shoes that make sense for them.”

Although she has Christian Louboutin’s Über-vertiginous So Kate pump in “every color” and claims they’re like slippers for her, Zendaya realizes that both stylistically and economically, that’s not how most of her target audience shops.

“I want women to feel expensive, luxurious and beautiful, but not have to spend three years saving up for one pair of shoes,” she added.

Titan CEO Joe Ouaknine hesitates to call the retooled line a relaunch, standing behind the first collection as “the best of them all,” he said. “We stayed with the same looks, but adjusted our sourcing.” (Titan’s brand portfolio includes Charles Jourdan, Badgley Mischka and Splendid; the company formerly produced L.A.M.B and Gx by Gwen Stefani.)

The new label also has a fresh name: Daya by Zendaya. It starts at $70 for slide sandals and tops out at $125 for mid-calf gladiators. The collection will retail at Nordstrom, Kohl’s, Von Mauer, Zappos.com and Amazon.com.

Ouaknine is betting big on Zendaya after initially needing some convincing from Vivienne Westwood U.S. CEO Cristiano Mincio that she was indeed a bankable name.

“[Mincio] said, ‘You have to meet this young artist.’ My first reaction was I don’t need another celebrity,” Ouaknine said. “I promised I would look her up and get back to him.” After three follow-ups, he agreed to meet with Zendaya and her father, who oversees her business deals, on the Disney lot where she was rehearsing for hit TV show “K.C. Undercover.”

It didn’t take much convincing.

“The second she said one word, I liked her,” Ouaknine remembered. “The factor that made me decide to work with her was her maturity. She told me right then that she was in charge and she would make all the decisions on her own.”

From there, he said the talents of the 2014 “Dancing With the Stars” runner-up sealed the deal. “This girl became a fashion icon before the age of 18,” he said. “She is a phenomenon in my eyes.”

For his part, Roach had a similar experience of discovering Zendaya’s unique package, albeit even earlier, when she was 12. He’s since become integral to her fashion evolution, most notably in her 2015 Oscars appearance, where her waist-length dreads made headlines after TV personality Giuliana Rancic made some ill-advised comments. The resulting media storm only enhanced the teenager’s fame and reputation as a style risk-taker.

“We have this unique synergy. We can finish each other’s sentences,” Roach said. “I’ll know what she wants to say or do. We’ve grown up together. I call her my fashion soul mate.” The duo is now courted by hard-to-crack labels such as Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein and pops up together at fashion weeks in New York and Paris.

It makes sense, then, that the inseparable pair share the billing as co-creative directors of Daya by Zendaya.

“We try to be as hands-on as possible. We look at fabrication and study heel heights and trends, like what’s selling in which part of the country,” Roach said. “It’s a long, drawn-out process just to get to the shoe. We both didn’t think it would be that much work, but it is. She’s adamant about having control and input on something that has her name on it.”

For Zendaya, a shoe must meet certain specifications for her to be satisfied. And with influences such as Louboutin, the star has high standards. “I wouldn’t create a shoe that I don’t love and wouldn’t put on my own foot,” she said.

When it comes to the technical aspects of shoemaking, her opinionated nature and know-how are impressive for someone with zero design experience. “[Titan] is cool and great to work with because they are very open to all of the little obsessive details I have,” she said, citing the cut of the vamp and throat and height of the pitch as key focal points. “I am all about a good ‘foot shoe,’ meaning I want it to look good on my foot. There is nothing worse than a shoe that doesn’t make your leg look good. That irritates me.”

Zendaya

On set with FN in her collection’s strappy pumps, platform sandals and cutout booties, Zendaya glides effortlessly, but recognizes she possesses a special grace and groove. “I’ve trained my feet to [wear high heels], but not everybody wants to do that. How do I get the lower pitch but still have it look good?” she said, noting that was something she asked early on in the creative process with Titan’s design team.

As a result, Zendaya pushed her partners to create a more modernized pump, the Kyle, one of her favorites in the collection. “I wanted to see a little toe cleavage, and that’s something that was tricky for Titan,” she said.

With celebrity lines, blatant copying of high-end designers happens often. That’s something both Zendaya and Roach aimed to avoid. “I don’t want to create knockoffs,” she said. “I want to create our own movement and style, even though I don’t believe in trends.”

At the same time, she added, “I don’t want people to feel like they have the look for less; I want them to have the look that just happens to be for less.”

Zendaya’s mother, Stoermer, who oversees her calendar and social media, said this command of her brand and “the buck stops here” attitude are integral to her daughter’s success. “Everything is her. She oversees it all,” she said. “It’s always her voice; she’s always stayed authentic.”

Bonnie Fuller, editor-in-chief of celebrity site Hollywood Life (owned by FN parent Penske Media), has been charting her rapid rise and said Zendaya’s style has allowed her to stand out. “She’s incredibly versatile and not somebody that’s locked into one style,” Fuller said. “Her appeal is also that she can be casual and relatable one day and then go super-sophisticated or bold the next. She changes her look more than any other young star.”

This element of surprise is exactly the intended result, according to Roach. “You can’t just look at something and say, ‘That’s Zendaya,’ ” he said. “As opposed to other people you look at and say, ‘That’s very J.Lo or very Gwen Stefani.’ For us, every look is a new experience.”

While a singular fashion sense may be propelling her brand, Zendaya has much deeper aspirations.

“I’m about empowering young people, women and people of color — everybody,” said Zendaya, whose father is African-American and mother is of Dutch descent. There aren’t many people with a mixed-race background who have her platform, and she knows it. “I try my best to be a light source in a dark world sometimes.”

Zendaya Stylist Law Roach

Zendaya recalled the time she met Winfrey and almost cried. “Oprah is one of the dopest people in the world. When you think of her brand, it’s positive,” she said. “If she says it’s the best tea in the world, you will drink that tea because she’s trusted. She’s charitable and there is a meaning to her projects.”

Similarly, she admires Rhimes, creator of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and other big shows. “The woman is a genius. She creates gold and owns a night [on TV]. I want to own a night,” said the actress, who just wrapped “The Greatest Showman on Earth” with Hugh Jackman and is filming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” with Robert Downey Jr. “She also creates roles and representation for different types of people on camera.”

Daya by Zendaya Shoes Kyle Pump

The Kyle, a modernized pump featuring toe cleavage at Zendaya’s request. “Standard pointy-toe heels all come out
the same,” she said. “I wanted the build of it to look expensive.”

Zendaya’s third hero recently embraced the budding star. Beyoncé invited the rising star to appear in scenes from her “Lemonade” visual album. On that experience, she has “no words.”

Right now, Zendaya certainly has a lot to beam about. “When it comes to fashion and life, a lot of things I do are powered by how I feel, what makes me smile and what makes me happy,” she said.
