Zendaya’s New Shoe Line: An Exclusive First Look

Zendaya will soon be wearing her own shoes on the red carpet.

The actress and singer jetted to New York City for a launch event, where she unveiled her debut collection of spring ’16 styles, titled Daya after her family nickname. From cutout details to fringe touches on a variety of slides, wedges, block heels, and pointed-toe flats, the styles also embrace bold colors, from fuschia to cobalt.

In the showroom of Titan Industries, her partner for the line, Zendaya sat down with Footwear News to talk candidly about all things shoes and her new venture.

“I wanted shoes that were going to speak for themselves. If [consumers] didn’t know who the heck I was, which a lot of people don’t, they are still going to like the shoes,” she said. “I don’t want people buying because they’re Zendaya shoes — they are for everyone.”

Affordability was very important to the star as well, so all styles come in under $225. And even though she’s 5-foot-10, Zendaya did not shy away from creating high-heeled looks.

“One of her big platforms is telling girls that it’s okay to be tall and wear heels — it’s okay to be the tallest girl in the room,” said longtime stylist and design collaborator Law Roach.

But Zendaya chimed in, saying that there’s a time and place for everything when it comes to shoes.

“If you’re going to the airport, I’m not the lady to wear heels — I’m just not going to do it,” she said. “If I’m going to an event, I wouldn’t be caught dead in flats. I love to be tall on red carpets.”

Up next, the star will jet off again, this time to Las Vegas, where she’ll show her collection at FN Platform.

Zendaya Reveals What Shoe She Wants To Invent

Zendaya is having an ‘it girl’ moment in the shoe world. The actress and star debuted her spring ’16 collection in New York City Wednesday, where she chatted with FN about her personal style and diving into shoe design.

“I love shoes. Being on the red carpet and in that world, I became obsessed with shoes and built my [personal] collection. At the time, I was always in sneakers and it was a big step to get into heels,” said Zendaya, adding that when it comes to style icons, she flocks toward those that march to the beat of their own drum.

“I don’t like to copy styles or anything like that, I want to create my own. I definitely have respect for people who do what they want and people who have established their own look,” she said. “Someone like Erykah Badu, they do what they want and in a sense that is very inspiring. That makes her so dope.”

Here, Zendaya gives FN a sneak peek at her personal closet, with FN 3.

  1. How many pairs in your personal collection?
“It’s a lot. I’m obsessed with Christian Louboutin, especially his ‘So Kate’ pumps. But I think a lot of those are going to have to move aside…we’re going to have to empty stuff and make room for my own shoes.”

2. Heels or flats?

“It depends on the day, you know what I mean? If you’re going to the airport, I’m not the lady to wear heels. I’m just not going to do it. If I’m going to an event, I wouldn’t be caught dead in flats. I like to be tall on the red carpet.”

3. If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?

“If there were such a thing as transformer shoes, I would be that. I would be this [wedge], but it turns into this ,” she said, while pointing at her own collection. “That’s actually a great idea…we should patent that!” she continued.

Zendaya’s Shoe Line: The Actress Opens Up To FN About Daya

Last Wednesday, straight off the plane from her hometown of Los Angeles, Zendaya entered the Titan Industries showroom with a huge grin on her face.

Energized and excited, she kicked up her feet to show off her white cage booties with cutout details — one of the styles in her new collection. Armed with a highly active social media following and a unique design sensibility, Zendaya is ready to make her in shoes.

“I love shoes. [Early on], I was always in sneakers, and it was a big step to get into heels,” she recalled of entering the spotlight at age 14 with her Disney show, “Shake it Up!” “Now that I’ve established my own red carpet persona, this is the perfect time for me to come out with my own shoes. Titan has an amazing team of people who took our vision and [combined it] with theirs.”

The Disney actress and singer is the latest famous name to join the crowded celebrity fashion market through a partnership with Huntington Beach, Calif.-based Titan. Her line of vibrant, playful footwear is called Daya. It’s launching at retail for spring ’16 with 26 styles priced at $125 to $175, in three to four colors each — think bold shades of fuchsia, cobalt and yellow.

“I was inspired by those girls who are going to prom, their first job interview or stepping into the job world. The mom who has kids and doesn’t want to spend a trillion dollars,” she said.

Zendaya has a refreshingly hands-on approach. For example, she took part in multiple three-hour Skype calls with the Titan team to perfect details like the best hue of nude and the number of straps on her styles.

Titan is banking on Zendaya’s personal involvement to add to the collection’s allure. (Daya is a nickname that only her family and close friends use.)

“She’s inviting her fans into her family,” said her longtime stylist and design collaborator, Law Roach.

Titan Chairman Joe Ouaknine said it’s rare to find a celebrity with a desire to dive so deeply into the project.

“For the first time, we’re going to have a celebrity who’s going to wear the shoes and talk about the shoes when she posts something,” said Ouaknine, noting Zendaya’s 9.9 million Instagram followers. “When we first met, she took charge of the conversation, and I thought, ‘This has potential.’”

Andrea Bernholtz, who recently left Rock & Republic to become CEO of Titan Industries, said her first priority is to build buzz and awareness around Zendaya’s line — though those details are under wraps for now.

“The relationship is organic and authentic. She put thought behind it and developed everything,” said Bernholtz, who officially came on board two months ago. “She’s such a perfectionist and has a fresh eye and perspective.”

Also in the works is a standalone e-commerce site for Daya shoes, a first for a Titan celebrity line. (The company also produces L.A.M.B. and Gx by Gwen Stefani, Badgley Mischka, Charles Jourdan and Cynthia Vincent.)

Even in a sea of celebrity collections — Kendall and Kylie Jenner launched their much-buzzed-about line at FFANY last week — Zendaya believes she can fill a void in the market.

“There’s an empty space when it comes to the girl I was when I was 14, just starting off in the industry. I didn’t have the money to buy the Louboutins that I wanted so badly,” she said. “A lot of times, the shoe option just wasn’t there.”

That’s why affordable prices were so important to the star, though she admits that balancing price and value can be challenging. “Price is such an important thing for me, but how do we not compromise the shoes?” she said.

As part of her research, Zendaya, who is currently recording a new album, turned to her family and women within her close circle. “I brought my niece to a lot of meetings, and I talked to my sister about styles and the max [amount of money] she would spend,” the singer said. “I was never into sandals or flats — that just wasn’t my thing. So I asked, ‘How do I convince myself, how do I get myself to like these?’ We created something I like — a gladiator or a dope pointy-toe flat. It’s not forced that I have to wear these shoes.

“I wanted shoes that would speak for themselves,” she continued. “If people didn’t know who the heck I was, which a lot of people don’t, [I still want them] to like the shoes.”

Teen Choice Awards: Memorable Celebrity Shoes From Years Past

The 2015 Teen Choice awards are just around the corner and to celebrate the upcoming show, FN looks back at some of the best shoe looks on the red carpet from years past. This year, the show will be airing live on Aug. 16, and Ludacris will team up with “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and Josh Peck as co-hosts.

With Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Jack Black, Sarah Hyland, Bethany Mota, Tyler Oakley, Gregg Sulkin and many more stars scheduled to appear during the broadcast, statements shoes are given on this year’s red carpet. But can they compare to the looks of Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Zendaya from 2014?

J.Lo had one of last year’s best moments on stage as she reunited with her “Maid In Manhattan” co-star Tyler Posey after 12 years, in Ermanno Scervino sandals, no less.

And although Zendaya was not a shoe designer in 2014, she knew just how to pick ’em — walking the carpet in pink Christian Louboutin pumps and winning Candie’s Choice Style Icon Award. The Disney star caught up with FN as she revealed her new footwear line last week, and it’s no surprise she’s often seen in Louboutin. “My black So Kate pumps by Christian Louboutin. I wear them everywhere,” she told FN on her most memorable onstage shoes.

Teen Choice Awards Red Carpet

Christian Louboutin is a Teen Choice Award red carpet mainstay. In 2011, both Kim and Kourtney Kardashian opted for the red-soled shoes, and so did  “Scandal’s” Kerry Washington in 2013. Last year, “Glee’s” Lea Michele chose a bold look in the designer’s Athena sandals paired with a Fausto Puglisi dress.

When it comes to onstage looks, Jason Derulo had a moment in Giuseppe Zanotti while he performed in 2014, and this year we can count on “Empire” star Bryshere Gray for an outstanding sneaker look — if his Teen Choice performance style is anything like his recent Billboard Music Awards showing. Gray, who plays Hakeem Lyon on the hit show, performed in gold Adidas Originals x Jeremy Scott Wings 3.0 sneakers.

Top nominees for the 2015 awards include Swift,  “Empire,” “Pitch Perfect 2,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “Furious 7.”

The show will air on Sunday at 8 p.m. on Fox. Click through the gallery below to see more of the best looks from years past.

Ever wonder which celebrities shoe designers and executives are drawn to? Whether a crush or a muse, the industry always has its eyes on the biggest and brightest names in show biz — they’re often a source of inspiration, too. Spy made the rounds at FN Platform in Sin City to discover a few footwear players’ favorite faces from the big screen.

Zendaya: “I have a lot of celebrity crushes, but Channing Tatum is always a good go-to because he can dance.”

Giuseppe Zanotti: “I don’t have just one muse or favorite celebrity. I work with many amazing music artists, like Beyoncé, Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez and FKA Twigs, and it is always an exciting and enriching experience. I have recently designed the shoes for Janet Jackson’s tour, which will kick off on Aug. 31. Janet has been a great friend for many years, and I have the utmost respect for her as one of the most iconic and outstanding artists and style icons of our time. I am excited to see her on tour. Aside from the music world, Gigi Hadid’s natural beauty fascinates me — she perfectly embodies the spirit of my creations.”

Chloe Gosselin: “I have to pick a woman so I don’t get in trouble [with my fiancé],” she joked. “Sophia Bush does so much with charity and has a great energy.”

Paul Andrew: “I’ve become a fan of Charlize Theron. I did meet her 15 years ago, with Narcisco [Rodriguez] … and my jaw hit the ground. She’s so gorgeous. From that moment on, I desired to put shoes on her feet. Alas, that has not happened yet. But we are working on it.”

The singer and actress runs the gamut when it comes to her shoe. From sneakers to boldly colored pumps to laceup boots, she is not afraid to take risks when it comes to her footwear. It’s fitting, then, that the star also recently debuted her own line of shoes, called Daya, with Titan Industries.

Zendaya was in Dubai to celebrate her birthday, where she paired her Christian Siriano ensemble with white sneakers.

From Jimmy Choo to Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin and Adidas, Zendaya knows how to sport a wide range of shoes with style. And now, she’ll start incorporating her own line on the red carpet.

When FN caught up recently with Zendaya at FN Platform, where she was showcasing her footwear line with Titan, the star had some fun things to say about TV and music.

Her favorite show of the moment?

“I’m watching from the beginning, because I never saw it, ‘Grey’s Anatomy,'” she said. “I’m on Season 5.”

For music, the star said she prefers a blast from the past.

“Anything Michael Jackson, forever and always,” she said. “There are a lot of really dope young artists and people coming out, so many young women doing their thing. I like the old-school jams though. It’s my passion.”

Zendaya To Unveil Two Madame Tussauds Wax Figures

Zendaya’s star power continues to grow.

The singer, actress and shoe designer will be unveiling two new wax figures at Madame Tussauds San Francisco on Nov. 21. The second figure will be featured at Madame Tussauds Orlando. This marks a special occasion — Zendaya joins an exclusive group of celebrities who have received an outstanding number of fan requests for their figures to be featured in multiple Madame Tussauds attractions.

For one of her wax figures, Zendaya donated the hot pink Material Girl dress she wore to the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.  No word on which shoes her wax self will wear, but she did pair that dress with pink Christian Louboutin pumps.

Teen Choice Awards Red Carpet

Zendaya first met with Madame Tussads’ studio artists in June. She underwent a Madame Tussauds sitting that captured her expressions and  poses. More than 250 measurements were taken, and her eye color and hair color were matched.

For her second figure, Madame Tussauds worked with designer Rubin Singer to recreate the military-inspired look, originally paired with yellow sky-high platform Loboutins, that Zendaya wore to the 2014 BMI Hip Hop R&B Awards.

It’s no surprise she’s often seen in Christian Louboutin. She told Footwear News that her most memorable onstage shoes are “my black So Kate pumps by Christian Louboutin. I wear them everywhere.” But her wax figures could also be fitted with pointy-toe pumps from her new shoe line, Daya, since she wore a pair at this year’s Teen Choice Awards.

Zendaya said in a statement, “Working with the Madame Tussauds team was such an amazing honor — they really took the time to capture every detail, including all the natural features that make up the real me. It feels even more special to know that my beautiful fans worked so hard to make this happen, and I’m excited to see how they will react to my new figures in San Francisco and Orlando.”

Jessica Simpson, Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani are all prime examples of stars who have been very successful debuting their own fashion and shoe brands.

Every year we see more and more crossover between fashion and entertainment — and this year was no different. In many ways, 2015 felt like the breakout year for footwear and music, as a number of artists from hip-hop, country and popular music delved into the shoe-design business.

Of all of the big collaborations and launches of the year, the most notable was designer Kanye West’s extremely buzzed about (and industry recognized) collaboration with Adidas Originals on the Yeezy Boost. This year we saw multiple Yeezy releases, including various 350 colorways, and December has already seen the unveiling of the all-black Yeezy Boost 750, along with the latest 350 in tan, due to hit shelves just before the new year.

Rihanna too wasted no time entering the shoe business. The singer had been on somewhat of a hiatus from releasing solo tracks as she worked on her upcoming album, however she was very much in the public eye, thanks to her fashion associations. The star was named the new face of Dior, collaborated with Stance socks and launched a highly successful line with Puma, with each release promptly selling out. News also came that the singer will show with athletic brand next year at New York Fashion Week.

Who else made their foray into the shoe business this year from the music world?

Kacey Musgraves tried her hand at design with Lucchese, Pharrell Williams debuted some of the hottest styles with Timberland (also taking home FN’s Collaboration of the Year award), and Rita Ora unveiled her new collaboration with Adidas. Other notable hip-hop artists who dipped their toes in the shoe biz included Ja Rule who launched Maven in partnership with Steve Madden and Pusha T who unveiled his anticipated King Push EQT sneakers with Adidas.

Even teen-star Zendaya debuted a line this year entitled Sole of Daya and got serious with her fashion choices in a new music video featuring only clothes right-off-the-runway from Vivienne Westwood.

Who is the only major exception to the music-rule this year? Social media stars and fashion mavens, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, who debuted their new brand this summer. The offering, for the sisters’ contemporary Kendall + Kylie collection, launched for spring ’16 and included pumps, flatforms, booties and gladiator-style sandals.

And turning our attention to the sports world, in addition to the plethora of signature NBA shoes that were released, elite footballer Victor Cruz launched his Nike Air Cruz TR silhouette.

Christian Louboutin leads with the most-liked Instagram post on the Footwear News account this year. Though the designer is known for his famous red-soled shoes, it was his red lipstick from the Louboutin beauty collection that garnered the most double taps.

His shoes did appear on the most-liked list for the red Pigalle ombré patent leather pumps that Rachel McAdams wore during the 2015 ESPYS. McAdams walked the red carpet to promote her boxing film “Southpaw” five months ago in the standout Louboutin heels, paired with a plunging red suit.

Zendaya took second place for likes, thanks to her new shoe line that launched in August. The photo featured The Sole of Daya Darcy pump, which she wore to the 2015 Teen Choice Awards and a signed copy of her Footwear News feature story.

Chiara Ferragni, FN Spy cover girl and the Blonde Salad blogger, received lots of attention on our Instagram for her collection of eye-catching shoes that were auctioned off at an amfAR generationCURE event back in June. The photo featured Chiara Ferragni Collection Holly pumps, Neverstop slip-on sneakers and her Flirty slipper styles.

Other popular posts showcased Olgana heels, including ones from its debut bridal collection.

Celebrities topping the list include Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Sandra Bullock and front-row favorites from the Givenchy NYFW runway show.

With the year almost over, we’ve spent the last week or so reviewing all that 2015 had to offer. It was mid-December 2014 when we launched FootwearNews.com — so in addition to reliving the highs and lows of the shoe world over the past 12 months, we are also celebrating our one-year anniversary.

And what a year it has been! We’ve had robust international Fashion Week and red carpet coverage, emerging designers to introduce, industry veterans to celebrate and, of course, celebrity exclusives to break.

From Zendaya launching her first shoe line to Kendall and Kylie Jenner revealing their new brand and Pusha T launching his King Push EQT sneaker with Adidas, Footwear News was there, front and center, to report on every detail we knew our readers wanted to know.

Sole of Daya

Zendaya launched her shoe line, Daya, over the summer, with partner Titan Industries.

Just like asking us to choose between our favorite shoes, picking our favorite stories would be a near-impossible task. So we took the easy way out and let the numbers do the talking.

Below are the 7 most-viewed stories on FootwearNews.com during 2015.

1. The Craziest Awards Show Red Carpet Shoes

Dare you attempt to forget Redfoo in metallic chaps and slip-on sneakers or suppress the memory of Helena Bonham Carter’s color miss-matched shoes. Throw in Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress and platform wedges and Björk’s swan dress and t-bar sandals and there you have it — the celebrity fashion story that drove the most traffic in 2015.

2. Celebrities Spotted Wearing Yeezy Boost Sneakers

2015 was the Year of Yeezy. Numerous phenomenally successful shoe releases with Adidas, a coveted Shoe of the Year win at FN’s annual Achievement Awards and unveiling of Season 2 apparel, made 2015 a year that Kanye West dominated. With such high demand for all the Adidas Yeezy Boost kicks came a seemingly nonstop slew of celebrities taking to the streets (and social) to show off their pairs.

3. Zendaya’s New Shoe Line: An Exclusive First Look

The teen actress and singer jetted into New York City to unveil her debut collection of spring ’16 styles, called Daya after her family nickname. From cutout details to fringe touches on a variety of slides, wedges, block heels and pointed-toe flats, the looks also embraced bold colors, from fuschia to cobalt. FN sat down with the star to find out all about her inspirations, go-to designers and what she was up to next.

4. Celebrity Designer Statement Shoes Summer 2015

One of our most popular franchises, FN’s celebrity statement-shoe galleries are updated daily, ensuring that there isn’t a standout shoe moment that we miss. As it turns out, what the stars were donning on their feet for summer was what grabbed readers’ attention the most.

5. Celebrity Wedding Shoes

There’s just something about a wedding. Throw in the celebrity factor and a good measure of well-shod feet and you have yourself one highly popular story. From iconic royal nuptials to modern vows, we focused on one thing — the shoes.

6. Fashion Month: The Best Fall 2015 Runway Shoes

Perhaps it was the comprehensive gallery that resulted in this story’s popularity. Of all the seasons, only fall ’15 made the top 7. The season brought some major shoe moments — from Dior’s thigh-high latex boots to Giambattista Valli’s racy over-the-knee laceup boots.

7. Met Gala Shoes: Memorable Celebrity Fashion Styles From Years Past

There’s certainly no shortage of red carpet events. The Grammys, Oscars, VMAs, CFDAs — you name it, we cover it. But of all the year’s star-studded gatherings, it was the Met Gala that drew the most attention from our readers. However, beating the 2015 Met Gala red carpet coverage was our roundup of memorable moments from years past.

Zendaya hit the 73rd Golden Globe Awards for the first time looking gorgeous in a Marchesa gown paired with Ruthie Davis Trophy sandals. The 5.5 inch platform shoes, hidden under her dress, gave the actress a couple of extra inches on red carpet host Ryan Seacrest. The two discussed Zendaya making Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and how shes plans to continue to be a positive influence heading into 2016.

Leading up to the Globes, Zendaya wore the same Ruthie Davis platforms paired with a sheer dress to W magazine’s pre-Golden Globes party in Los Angeles on Thursday night. The ankle strap sandal features a rose gold buckle and mini matte black studs.

2015 was quite a year for the former Disney star. Zendaya released her first shoe collection called Daya with Titan Industries and she received her own Zendaya Barbie Doll. Mattel created a doll replica of the star based on her red carpet look from the 2015 Oscars ceremony.

FN caught up with Zendaya last year to talk shoes. On wearing heels and flats, she said, “It depends on the day. If you’re going to the airport, I’m not the lady to wear heels. If I’m going to an event, I wouldn’t be caught dead in flats. I love to be tall on red carpets.”

Tall is an understatement. Zendaya continually makes the red carpet her catwalk as she sports a wide range of shoe styles from Jimmy Choo to Giuseppe Zanotti and even her own line.

Zendaya can now add easy, breezy, beautiful CoverGirl to her vocabulary. The actress and shoe designer has been named the new face of the beauty brand.

Zendaya took to social media to share the news with her fans on Thursday. She then posted another photo wearing CoverGirl makeup on her face and shoes from her new line, Sole of Daya, on her feet.

“I am so honored to join the company of a roster as celebrated and diverse as CoverGirl’s,” she said in statement. “I can’t wait to share some of my own beauty tips with fans, and work alongside CoverGirl to continue empowering girls and women to celebrate their individuality.”

In 2015, Zendaya released her first shoe collection, with Titan Industries, and she received her own Zendaya Barbie Doll. Mattel created a replica of the star based on her red carpet look from the 2015 Oscars ceremony.

There seems to be no sign of Zendaya slowing down in 2016. So far, she joins Ellen Degeneres and Sofia Vergara as a CoverGirl, and she made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. The role model also has made it her mission to continue to be a positive influence heading into the new year.

Zendaya’s first CoverGirl ad will launch live during the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. We will keep an eye out to see whether she wears Sole of Daya during music’s big night or if she turns to Ruthie Davis, as she did for the 2016 Golden Globes.

Zendaya made quite the fashion statement yesterday when she stepped out for her appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last night. The singer and shoe designer was spotted wearing a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti Carine sandals while making her way to the Los Angeles studio for the show.

The sandals have earned quite the following by the stars with everyone from Rita Ora to Chrissy Teigen opting for them on the red carpet. We have to applaud Zendaya’s different styling here: We love that she took a red carpet shoe and made it work for the day.
