On Dec. 3, Tommy Hilfiger will be honored as the Collaborator of the Year at the FN Achievement Awards. Below is an article from the magazine’s Dec. 2 print issue about his buzzy — and financially successful — partnerships with Zendaya and Lewis Hamilton.
Authenticity and engagement. That’s what fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger looks for in a brand partner, and he struck gold in 2019 not once but twice. His joint collections with race car driver Lewis Hamilton and actress-singer Zendaya hit big during the year, transcending buzz to become major revenue generators.
The Hamilton-Hilfiger partnership was born of a friendship forged in the Formula 1 world. For their first design meeting a few seasons ago, Hamilton brought a huge duffel bag filled with favorite vintage and current pieces. From the assortment, the duo quickly landed on a concept they dubbed “luxury streetwear.”

“What struck me as being very memorable during the whole experience was Lewis’ thought process and engagement with doing the logo because we wanted to marry his branding with my flag logo. We went through many different renditions, but he loved this old English lettering,” said Hilfiger. “We went back and forth with the graphic artist many, many times, and he was meticulous with the details, which really impressed me.”

For his part, Hamilton described Hilfiger as being instrumental in teaching him how to navigate the fashion landscape. “To get the chance to work alongside him has been surreal and a tremendous learning experience,” said the racing star. “The thing about Tommy is, he has a distinct point of view and aesthetic, but one that can work for the masses. It’s classic, approachable and refined — just like him.”
Hilfiger’s partnership with Zendaya began with a meeting at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles several months before the pair debuted their first collaboration in March at a spring ’19 see-now, buy-now show in Paris. Zendaya and her longtime stylist, Law Roach, rolled out inspiration boards with photographs of 1970s idols such as Bianca Jagger, Farrah Fawcett and Joan Collins that Hilfiger said reminded him of younger days at Studio 54.
“Tommy is an expert in iconic dressing,” said Zendaya. “It’s an incredible opportunity [to work with him]. I love fashion. What better way and who better to learn from … than Tommy Hilfiger?”

That Paris show was lauded for its inclusivity, featuring diverse models who reflected a range of sizes and ages. The magic continued in September: Hilfiger returned to the Big Apple after several seasons away, staging the Tommy x Zendaya fall ’19 production at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. It was one of the top three buzziest social media events on the Nw York Fashion Week calendar, generating nearly 600,000 engagements across the fashion brand’s platforms, according to social media analytics firm ListenFirst.
The fall ’19 range was also a financial success, according to Hilfiger, who described it as one of his all-time best-sellers. The collaborative line has since been spotted on young tastemakers, from Bebe Rexha to Storm Reid and Skai Jackson.
“It wasn’t just a fashion show; it was a performance, with music, fashion, pop culture and iconic images. It [became] disruptive, historical and memorable, and that was our goal,” said Hilfiger.

The fashion icon is no stranger to successful partnerships. Since launching his label in 1985, Hilfiger has teamed up with stars of every decade. In September 2016, he created four capsules with supermodel Gigi Hadid, introducing a see-now, buy-now runway experiment.
While a number of brands now use the buy-now sales model, it hasn’t been adopted, perhaps because it’s “very difficult to execute,” said Hilfiger. “You have to design way in advance, manufacture way in advance and you have to deliver exactly on time because showtime is very precise,” he explained. “It can’t be a day late or [even] a few hours late. It has to be completely on time.”
In 2020, Hilfiger will celebrate his 35th brand anniversary, but don’t expect him to stop innovating. “That’s the exciting part of what I do: trying to figure out what’s next,” he said.
“In keeping the brand relevant, we always have to do something next that is different from what has been done in the past.”
The 33rd annual FNAA ceremony will be held at the IAC Building in New York. Sponsors for the event include Klarna, Geox, The Style Room Powered by Zappos, FDRA, Micam Milano and Buchanan’s Scotch Whisky.
As part of our FN Legends video series, Tommy Hilfiger sits down to discuss how music has influenced his namesake label.
“When I started my business in the late ’60s, it was a music fashion revolution taking place. It was the summer of Woodstock,” said Hilfiger. “It’s when the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Jimmy Hendrix and all of the cool rock groups were touring America and changing the way that people looked at music and the way they listened to music. So I was inspired by that.”
That inspiration led Hilfiger to open his first store, People’s Place, in his hometown of Elmira, N.Y.
“I always wanted to connect the brand to music and musicians and pop culture. I really thought that if the musicians who were relevant were wearing my clothes, their fan base would come to us,” said Hilfiger. “In a sense, that was social media back then. When Britney Spears was on tour or Jennifer Lopez was playing at a stadium or doing a concert wearing my clothes, their fans would then come to my brand.”
The designer also discussed his “epic” collaboration with singer-actress Zendaya, with whom he worked on collections for spring ’19 and fall ’19.
“When she started collaborating with us, we thought, ‘OK, this is great. She’s a TV star, she’s a movie star, she’s a musician,'” he explained. “But what we didn’t know was that she was going to come out with a new show called ‘Euphoria’ that was going to skyrocket. I think that it was maybe luck that we engaged with her at that time.”
Hilfiger added that Zendaya, who is 23, is “beyond her years.”
“She said, ‘Yeah, I think like a 70-year-old,” Hilfiger explained. “And I really believe that’s because she’s so in tune with life. She’s very, very present, and she’s very aware of everything that’s going on around her.”
Celebs on the Critics Choice Award Red Carpet were not afraid to steal the spotlight tonight with bold colors. Many of the stars have left the neutral tones at home, including Zendaya.

The “Euphoria” actress posed for the camera in an eye-catching two-piece ensemble by Tom Ford in hot pink, which is set to be spring’s biggest colorway. The look featured a cropped top with a mock turtleneck neck line and a silk ribbon, which tied around the star’s back. She paired the look with a flowing maxi skirt. On her feet, the 22-year-old kept the pink color scheme in check and sported a pair of satin magenta Iriza pumps from Louboutin, which are available in a similar colorway at Matchesfashion.com for $695.

Other celebrities also arrived in colorful clothes. Like Zendaya, “Booksmart” actress Beanie Feldstein looked pretty in pink. The 26-year-old wore a silk midi dress with a pastel pink upper half which was complemented by a deep red bottom. For footwear, the star sported a pair of open-toe velvet Jimmy Choo Holly platform heels with an ankle strap.
Kristen Bell at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Kristen Bell took another approach to the bold color trend in a jumpsuit by Cong Tri in neon green, one of the biggest colorways of 2019. The look included a ruffled top with wide legged trousers and a flowing capelike detailing at the back. She paired the jumpsuit with a matching pair of platform heels, which featured a peep-toe and stiletto heel.

The Critics’ Choice Awards was the second red carpet of an awards season that is shaping up to a be a whirlwind due to a truncated schedule (the Grammys air on Jan. 26; the Oscars on Feb. 9).
This time around, there was plenty of color, a palette of highly saturated oranges, yellows, turquoise and fuchsia, the last of which was Zendaya’s hue de nuit for a Tom Ford sculptural breastplate and matching skirt. It’s a far cry from the sea of gold, silver and champagne sequin and embellishment that has populated most red carpets of recent years.

But is it a better choice? Many of the colors seemed off; the wrong shades for winter skin. Kristen Bell’s lime green jumpsuit felt jarring, and the proliferation of tangerine on the red carpet merits a review of the color as fashion’s next statement hue.

But there were those who wore it well, like Alison Brie who donned a fitted Brandon Maxwell gown. Awkwafina opted for a bold yellow that she pulled off thanks to the pairing of a bright red lip. And Billy Porter continued his tour de force in a turquoise jumpsuit with an angular strapless neckline and gigantic pant legs.

Otherwise, the evening was a lesson in why actresses often dress in metallic neutrals and black: Because it’s quite often the most flattering choice.
Katie Holmes arrived at the American Australian Association Arts Awards in New York last night looking like a vision in white.
The actress shined in a white ruched long-sleeve dress from Khaite that hit ankle. She wore the off-the-shoulder look over an exposed black bra and a black coat from Wardrobe.NYC.

Despite the chilly weather in New York on Thursday, the former “Dawson’s Creek” star figured out a way to still wear strappy sandals and maintain her comfort. She chose a set of Calzedonia sheer black tights to wear under her almond-toe black thin-strap heels, keeping her legs and feet warm while matching the look perfectly.
The sheer stockings also allowed Holmes to show off her ruby red pedicure.

Zendaya has the perfect hack for dressing down a businesslike ensemble — and it’s all in the shoes.
While out and about in New York today with “Euphoria” co-star Jacob Elordi, Zendaya sported a camel coat over a blue button-down blouse and dark pinstriped pants. The look was office-appropriate, even for a more formal work environment, with neutral colors giving it a more subdued feel.

But on her feet, the Disney Channel alum wore a pair of checkerboard Vans Old Skool sneakers, adding the perfect punk rock twist to the otherwise business-chic outfit. A staple of the ’90s skateboarding scene, the Old Skool is favored by stars like Gwen Stefani and Hailey Baldwin; it features a sturdy suede and canvas upper with a reinforced toe cap, padded collar and Vans’ signature waffle outsole. The shoes are in stock on Vans.com for just $60.
Meanwhile, Elordi went incognito in a faded baseball cap, hoodie, slim-cut pants and dark shades. Like Zendaya, the actor reached for a pair of kicks, choosing Adidas Rivalry sneakers. The all-white lifestyle shoes are marked down on Adidas.com to just $33 (they originally retailed for $65).

The 41-year-old actress wore a draped midi dress with a floral pattern throughout and a plunging neckline. The dress’ brown hues and silhouette harkened back to the 1970s, although the piece isn’t vintage — it’s from Fendi’s spring ’20 collection and available for pre-order on Fendi.com now with a $3,290 price tag.

On her feet, the “Dawson’s Creek” alum wore a pair of pointed-toe blue pumps with a low-cut topline and slim heel. She carried a buttery yellow Fendi Peekaboo handbag and accessorized with a crystal pendant.
The ’70s-esque look was put together with help from Allison Bornstein, the wardrobe stylist who has helped oversee Holmes’ transformation into style star status over the past few months. The dress and shoe pairing was a chic day-to-night styling combination, working just as well for the office as for a cocktail party.
Another standout ensemble at the event came courtesy of none other than Zendaya. The “Euphoria” star wore a cardigan sweater and button-down top from Fendi spring ’20. On her feet, the A-lister sported a pair of Christian Louboutin Frenchissima boots, an over-the knee silhouette with hook detailing and a black leather upper. The shoes sell on Net-a-Porter.com for around $2,600.

Zendaya skipped pajamas and glammed up for the 2020 Emmy Awards on Sunday night in California. Wearing a dress from Christopher John Roger’s fall ’20 line, Zendaya paired the black and purple number with diamond encrusted velvet heels by Christian Louboutin and a Bulgari amethyst cushion necklace for the occasion.
Zendaya, who has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama series for her work as Rue on HBO’s “Euphoria,” appeared in the video to do a quick twirl for her stylist.
For her shoes, the actress chose Christian Louboutin “Cristacora” heels, which showcase a pointed toe silhouette in luxe black velvet punctuated by a dazzling crystal applique heart embellishment. The red bottom shoes retail for $1,295 at Modesens.
Later in the evening, Zendaya appeared live at the Staples Center in her Christopher John Rogers look. Based on her Instagram, this is just one of the looks we may be seeing her wear tonight.

Zendaya made history on Sunday night at the 2020 Emmy Awards. The 24-year-old took home the trophy for Lead Actress In A Drama Series making her the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the category. The first-time nominee won for her role in HBO’s “Euphoria” drama.
“I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating. But I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people,” she said while accepting her award at home with friends and family cheering in the background. “And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”
Even though there was no red carpet for the virtual awards show, Zendaya and stylist Law Roach didn’t hold back when it came to her Emmy Awards outfits — yes, there were multiple.
Zendaya could be seen wearing a custom Armani Privé gown when she accepted her award. The dress was designed with a full polka-dot skirt, which was attached to a deep-V bra top that was embellished with crystals. She accessorized with Bulgari jewels.
Earlier in the show, Zendaya made an in-person appearance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles where Jimmy Kimmel was hosting the event without an audience. She wore a dress from Christopher John Rogers’ fall ’20 line, pairing the black and purple number with crystal-adorned velvet heels by Christian Louboutin and a Bulgari amethyst cushion necklace. The Christian Louboutin “Cristacora” heels, featured a pointed toe silhouette in black velvet and included a dazzling crystal appliqué heart embellishment. The red bottom shoes retail for $1,295 at Modesens.
The 2020 Emmy Awards may have been virtual and without a red carpet, but celebrities did not disappoint when it came to their fashion. On Sunday night, the Emmys aired lived from Los Angeles with Jimmy Kimmel hosting from the Staples Center sans audience.
A few actors and actresses were able to make appearances in-person, however, most were seen virtually at home and from the waist up. Regardless, most took the opportunity to dress up for the occasion, wearing couture gowns, high heels and jewelry. For many, it was an excuse to get glam for the first time in months.
Here, FN rounded up the best-dressed celebrities of the night.
Zendaya
Zendaya made history at the Emmys, taking home the trophy for Lead Actress In A Drama Series or her role in HBO’s “Euphoria.” She is the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the category. The actress opted for two looks during the night, including a dress from Christopher John Rogers and Christian Louboutin “Cristacora” heels. What stole the show was her custom Armani Privé gown, which she wore when she accepted her award from home. The dress was designed with a full polka-dot skirt that was attached to a deep-V bra top, embellished with crystals. She accessorized with Bulgari jewels.
Kudos to Regina King for pushing the fashion envelope on Sunday. She went all out for the occasion, wearing a bold blue Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown. The sapphire blue silk faille gown from the fall ’20 line was encrusted with bijoux embroidery and showcased a puffy one shoulder strap. She completed the look with Stuart Weitzman bronze Nudist sandals. King won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Angela Abar in the HBO series “Watchmen.”
Styled by Jason Bolden, Cynthia Erivo made a statement in a colorful Versace minidress at the Emmys. The actress made an appearance at the Staples Center to introduce a segment featuring Lena Waithe. Her look was detailed with textured purple and lime green material and included sculptural shoulders. While we couldn’t see her shoes, she chose a pair of Jimmy Choos.
Nominated for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for her HBO “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Robin Thede donned a dramatic gown by Christian Siriano. And underneath the off-the-shoulder camel-colored dress, she wore Stuart Weitzman platform sandals.
Tracee Ellis Ross went with couture for the 2020 Emmys. The “Black-ish” star, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, chose a gold lamé tiered halter gown from Alexandre Vauthier’s fall ’20 Couture collection. For footwear, Ross wore a pair of matching gold Jimmy Choo heels.
In a floral print, sculptural strapless dress, Kerry Washington opted for Oscar de la Renta for the occasion. The look comes from the label’s resort ’21 collection and features colorful flower patterns. She topped of the outfit with Jimmy Choo shoes, which couldn’t be seen. Later in the evening, the actress — who was nominated for Lead Actress In A Limited Series/Movie for her role in “Little Fires Everywhere” — changed into a beaded, sequin Dolce & Gabbana dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.
As usual, Billy Porter brought his unique sense of style to this year’s Emmys — even if he was only at his home. The “Pose” actor, who was nominated again for Lead Actor In A Drama (he was the first openly gay Black man to win the award at last year’s event), chose an all-white tailored look. The ensemble included wide-legged pants, which covered his Rick Owens platforms, and buttoned suit jacket complete with a draped train.
Yara Shadidi came to the Emmys to present, wearing a custom Prada ensemble. The dress was anything but understated as it was completely covered in dangling crystal embellishments. To top it off, the front and back of the bodice was detailed with hanging black feathers.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won his first Emmy for Supporting Actor In A Limited Series or Movie for his role in “Watchmen.” And from his couch, Abdul-Mateen II dressed like a winner in a striped Louis Vuitton suit. He elevated the look with a pair of patent leather loafers detailed with a silver chainlink adornment.
“Insecure” creator Issa Rae rounds out the best-dressed list for her choice in footwear. While she started the night in Stuart Weitzman sandals, she ended it in a pair of Nike Cortez sneakers, which she wore with her Sergio Hudson orange cut-out dress. The ensemble itself was a statement-piece, thanks to the dramatic padded shoulder detailing and sleek fit.
Fresh off her historic Emmy win, Zendaya is now playing another important role: voter advocate.
For National Voter Registration Day, the star went live with former first lady Michelle Obama on Instagram to send an important message to fans. “Sometimes we procrastinate — and I wanted to talk about the importance of not waiting until the last minute,” Zendaya said. “Make sure you’re registered to vote.”
Obama is taking over social media today with celebrities and other power players on Instagram as part of When We All Vote’s “Registered and Ready” Instagram takeover.
“Making sure your generation is voting. I know a lot of people your age are frustrated and feel alienated about the system. What we have to remember is that these elections are decided by a handful of votes,” Obama told Zendaya and more than 50,000 people tuning in. The former first lady noted that in some swing states, the 2016 election was decided by five votes in certain precincts.
With that in mind, Zendaya said it’s important to prepare for election day. The actress researched her polling place via an app during the last election. “I stood in line and got to talk to some people in my neighborhood,” she recalled, before asking Obama what the best way is to prep for election day.
Obama noted that she has voted by mail, in Illinois, since she and former president Barack Obama went to the White House. “You get these ballots, they’re long and they seem a little intimidating,” Obama admitted. “You can go online and get a sample ballot before you walk into the polling place. I look to organizations or people I trust who have done the work.”
“Sometimes, it’s hard to figure all those things out on your own,” Zendaya added. She encouraged followers to seek out information from When We All Vote.
Obama stressed that young people must not feel initimated as they make their own voting plans. “There is a lot of misinformation, particularly around voter fraud,” she noted.
Zendaya called on her fans to the honor all of their peers who are out their protesting and “doing the work.”
“All the history that has gone into making sure our vote counts and matters is really important. Now is as important of a time as any to make sure your voice is heard,” she said.
Obama concluded: “Nothing will change just by a hashtag or protest. In this democracy, the only thing that matters is what you do on election day. I just want to make sure young people understand that. Don’t ever stop protesting and making your voice heard in the streets. Don’t ever stop using social media. You just have to couple that with voting too.”
The “Euphoria” star’s stylist, Law Roach, shared an image of the full outfit to his Instagram and showed her wearing a Versace brown dress from its fall 1996 runway collection. It features a full-length and strapless silhouette with matching embellished detailing on the bodice. She styled the eye-catching look with a pair of coordinating Christian Louboutin pumps that feature a pointed toe.
They appear to be in the beloved So Kate model, a favorite of celebrities including Cardi B and Gwen Stefani. These pumps have an Italian leather construction, the brand’s signature red sole, and a towering 5-inch heel. To get a similar look, you can find the black pair for $725 at Net-a-Porter.com.
She accessorized the polished ensemble with tiered Bulgari earrings.
The GCFA Visionary Award was created to recognize industry trailblazers who are at the forefront of fashion and leaders in areas including sustainability, equality and diversity, according to a statement from Eco-Age. In 2017, the sustainable business agency collaborated with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana to launch the annual event in Milan.
“We admire and celebrate her aim to create a more accurate reflection of the world in which she lives in. From including the first plus-sized model in your 2019 Tommy Hilfiger show, to more recently using an all- Black team to create your September InStyle cover,” Livia Firth, founder of EcoAge, said. “By working with and championing trailblazing within the Black community, she is a leading example for younger generations and beyond, and this is why we are honouring Zendaya with The GCFA Visionary Award.”
For the last Emmy Awards, Zendaya wore another pair of pumps from the French shoe label. For the event, she styled her Christopher John Rogers purple and black dress with the Christian Louboutin “Cristacora” heels that feature a heart-shaped embellishment.

Zendaya continues to use her platform to encourage voter registration.
In her latest Instagram post, the 24-year-old Emmy-winning actress shared a video of her and a friend posing in front of a ballot drop-off box. “Just a couple of voters dropping off their ballots,” she captioned the video, which shows the duo giving viewers a thumbs up.
The “Euphoria” star sported an oversized hoodie, light wash jeans rolled at the ankle and Reebok’s Club C 85 Vintage sneakers with white tube socks — serving up the perfect outfit inspiration for staying comfortable while heading to the polls or filling out ballots at home.
For National Voter Registration Day in September, Zendaya also used her social media influence to impact potential Gen Z voters. The star went live on Instagram with former first lady Michelle Obama to not only advocate for voter registration, but also give fans information on how to prep for election day and do their own research.
“All the history that has gone into making sure our vote counts and matters is really important,” Zendaya said in the live stream. “Now is as important of a time as any to make sure your voice is heard.”
Zendaya, in fact, has long used her voice for good. Earlier this month, the star was awarded the Visionary Award at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards 2020 for her efforts in championing sustainability, equality and diversity in the fashion industry.

2021 may have just gotten started, but Zendaya is already serving up major fashion inspo.
On Jan. 2, the “Euphoria” star shared a slideshow of photos of herself on Instagram, wearing complete couture. The look included a sleek satin bustier that was adorned with a bow.
Zendaya teamed the top with a gray wool suit jacket and matching pants. The entire ensemble is from Alexandre Vauthier’s Spring Summer 2020 Couture collection, which was first shown in January of last year.
While Zendaya’s shoes are hidden in the photo, the actress doesn’t shy away from making statements with her footwear. In the past, Zendaya has teamed suits with Christian Louboutin pumps or sneakers. Back in 2017, she styled a black striped suit with white Adidas sneakers.
Suits and academia wear have been projected to be big for this year with brands like Giorgio Armani, Max Mara, Tom Ford and more showing different takes on the professional silhouette on the spring 2021 runways.
Additionally, you might want to add some gray to your wardrobe, according to Pantone. In December, the color authority, revealed the colors of 2021 to be Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. The hues are meant to represent “a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”
Add gray suiting into your closet with these picks below.
As 2021 just begins, it’s safe to say consumers are still glued to their TVs. HBO and HBO Max now have a combined 41.5 million domestic subscribers, up 20% from the year prior, and Netflix reported its fourth quarter 2020 earnings, announcing that the company has surpassed 200 million paid subscribers.
Television on various platforms has provided refuge amid Covid-19, anxiety-inducing politics, job loss, and more crises. Not only has TV been a way to disconnect, but it’s also been an aspirational tool as it continues to shape and influence fashion lovers stuck at home. With no red carpet in sight or street style stars constantly being photographed on the go, viewers have turned to their favorite characters for style inspiration.
“It used to be that ‘Sex and the City’ was all people talked about it because it really was like a show pony of fashion. There weren’t a lot of other shows like that at that time,” said “The Flight Attendant” costume designer Cat Thomas. “Now, there’s so much good television being made and it’s just growing by leaps and bounds across all the sort of disciplines. But I think clothes can be more subtle and people are talking about it more.”
“The Flight Attendant,” produced by and starring Kaley Cuoco, can be best-described as the HBO Max cat-mouse dramedy. Its lead (Cuoco), however, is also a young woman living in New York and jetsetting around the world as an alcoholic flight attendant. With that, comes a modern day wardrobe that is inevitably influencing its audience who is craving the chance to dress up and step out in heels.

“Cuoco’s character Cassie had this kind of tomboy chic style. She could be really practical, but she also could be really fun and whimsical at the same time, so that was our departure point,” said Thomas. “It was really important for me that people could connect to Cassie in a real way in that she could be a real person who has flaws, but also gets up and puts on her favorite pieces and has a sense of self [in her style.]”
Throughout the series, which has been nominated for SAG and Golden Globe Awards, Cuoco (she nabbed noms for acting, too) can be seen in New York wearing captivating coats from Marni and Stella McCartney, with perfectly tailored Levi jeans and practical, yet stylish boots, whether they were Tamara Mellon or Dr. Martens. She’s later seen in Rome walking on cobble stone streets in a mixed-print ensemble that would give any Instagram influencer a run for her money.

Since the days of Carrie Bradshaw, modern costume design has certainly evolved. Just look at Zendaya as Rue Bennett in HBO’s “Euphoria.” She’s a recovering teenage drug addict, there are no Manolos in sight, yet the show has become a pop culture phenomenon and its costumes are at its center of success. (Zendaya’s new Netflix project “Malcom & Marie” is also generating major fashion buzz, thanks to styling by Law Roach and a costume comprised of an evening gown and heels.)
“The world of ‘Euphoria’ is rooted in reality with a lot of the issues that the teens are experiencing, but the fashion and style, from makeup to the costumes, we really were given permission to sort of go off page and create our own reality that is the world of the show,” explained costume designer Heidi Bivens. “My challenge was to find a balance between pushing the style to hopefully be aspirational and exciting visually while [maintaining] the storytelling and developing characters, but also so that it wasn’t distracting in a way that took you out of the story.”

It worked. After the show premiered in 2019, it became a touchstone for Gen Z style all while influencing red carpet and Fashion Week trends seen in its eccentric makeup, for instance. Meanwhile, each character had their own unique style. Hunter Schafer’s Sailor Moon-like Jules wears platform Buffalo boots with fishnets and bold miniskirts and baby tees, and Barbie Ferreira’s character Kat (who was inspired by Thora Birch’s character in 2001’s “Ghost World”) can be seen in harnesses, latex and mesh.

“I do really look to Hunter for more of a collaboration because there is more crossover with her personal style. Jules, is very experimental like Hunter, whereas Zendaya is experimental with her red carpet style, but Rue is lucky she can get dressed in the morning,” added Bivens.
These looks showcased specific identity in their fashion that the audience has been able to connect to. Plus, the show has proven to be a great example of how modern fashion can be democratized in how it’s marketed on TV.
“We have a bar that was set and now I want to be able to rise above it even,” said Bivens, who is currently working on Season 2. “The potential is so great for what we could do now. I’ve talked to the producers about the idea of doing a shoppable show and merchandising looks or collaborating with designers on pieces, which were directly-inspired by the show that consumers could buy.”
Costume designer Heidi Bivens said working with Zendaya and Hunter Schafer is the “greatest gift.”

“Betty,” another HBO series is setting the new standard for fashion on TV. The show follows a group of female skateboarders around New York City. Empowerment is the theme and it’s showcased through their effortlessly cool styles that break gender norms. (It debuted in 2020 and has since been picked up for Season 2.)
“There’s Honeybear, for example. She has so much style. Like, she walks into a room wearing nipple covers and you’re not offended. It’s just Honeybear. And it’s so cool as a woman and you can do that. And it may change the way we view the way that women should act,” said costume designer Camille Garmendia on the impact of show’s fashion. “They’re there to inspire girls to just be themselves, because they’re so themselves.”

Their closets are filled with skate sneakers from Adidas, Nike, Reebok and Converse, paired with mix and match patterns on button-up tees, sports bras and baggy pants from Opening Ceremony and Supreme. Garmendia also used the opportunity to highlight a range of up-and-coming designers as well as local brands, including Iggy NYC, Vanna Youngstein, Boys of Summer, CNY.NYC, Noah Clothing, Emersin and Peels.
“When we look at the clothes, we don’t look at it genderized. They wear whatever they want to wear. Even the boys wear girls stuff. The girls wear boy stuff. It’s about what makes them comfortable,” Garmendia said.
It’s a sentiment that rings true today as the fashion industry shifts towards gender-neutral dressing.

Zendaya, who is also up for Best Actress for her role in “Malcolm & Marie” will also receive the fifth annual SeeHer Award, which honors women who work to push the boundaries of how women are portrayed in media.
The late actor Chadwick Boseman also has several nominations for his roles in “Da 5 Bloods” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Olivia Colman is notably the first person to earn a nomination in both film and television for her roles in “The Crown” and “The Father.”
The actress wowed at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday night, wearing an unconventional look only she can pull off: a white tank top. The star, who was styled by Law Roach, paired the basic with a bold orange skirt from Maison Valentino. The high-waisted piece billowed out at the sides, creating a dainty ballerina effect. The skirt also featured large pleats. Zendaya finalized the look by styling her hair in a braided half-up half down look and opted for dangling earrings.
Tonight was a special one for Zendaya as she was honored with the SeeHer Award, which recognizes a woman who “embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement to push boundaries, defy stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.”
The award was presented to her by her “Malcolm & Marie” co-star John David Washington. In her acceptance speech, Zendaya thanked Washington and shared: “Thank you to the Critics’ Choice Association for this incredible honor and See Her. This means so much to me, I thin, as I was thinking of things to say the only real thing I can think of is gratitude.”
Tonight was also big for for Roach as he also dressed Anya Taylor-Joy, who took home Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries for her role in Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” For Sunday’s ceremony, Taylor-Joy wore a whimsical tulle gown from Dior that came in a deep purple hue. The dress featured a sheer top and flowing skirt. Taylor-Joy teamed the dress with coordinating gloves, giving the ensemble a regal touch. The actress finalized the look with plum lipstick and dangling earrings.
As for Zendaya, her Critics’ Choice look falls right in line with her eye-catching style. For every red carpet, Zendaya is sure to make a statement. Other labels she’s worn include: Christopher John Rogers, Tom Ford and Vera Wang and footwear from Christian Louboutin. The star has also worked with Tommy Hilfiger, codeveloping a collection with the brand in 2019.
The Critics’ Choice Awards aired live at 7 p.m. ET on the CW. The show can also be streamed live on Hulu, fuboTV and Sling TV. Taye Diggs is hosting this year’s ceremony, making it his third time in a row. The actor will be emceeing live from the stage of Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
